Whether you lost someone you loved this year or ten years ago, you will always have a small part of your heart that continues to mourn. You will remember your loved one at random times and those thoughts will make you smile or become solemn. But those are natural thoughts. We don’t have to forget our loved one to move on with our life. We can remember them in a healthy way. This poem reminds us of that.

I thought of you with love today but that is nothing new
I thought about you yesterday and days before that too,
I think of you in silence I often speak your name
All I have are memories and your picture in a frame
Your memory is my keepsake with which I’ll never part
God has you in His keeping I have you in my heart.

I love this poem. I have set it aside in a memory box of mine to consider as a possible poem for my eulogy when I plan my funeral. I know, that sounds a bit morbid, but how else will you be sure that your loved ones are taken care of and have an easy time planning your service? By giving them an understanding of what would make you happy, you are actually helping them a great deal - you relieve a lot of their stress allowing them to simply mourn and celebrate your life.

After Glow
I’d like the memory of me
to be a happy one.
I’d like to leave an after glow
of smiles when life is done,
I’d like to leave an echo
whispering softly down the ways,
Of happy times and laughing
times and bright and
summer days.
I’d like the tears of those who
grieve, to dry before the sun,
Of happy memories that I leave
When life is done.

I was recently reading a online memorial put up in honor of a young mother who died while giving birth to her third child. She left two beautiful boys here on earth and their hurt was clearly articulated in their short tribute to her life. A poem like this can be an encouragement to those that are grieving over the loss of such an important person in your life - your mother.

The Magic of a Mother’s Touch
There’s magic in a Mother’s touch,
and sunshine in her smile.
There’s love in everything she does
to make our lives worthwhile.
We can find both hope and courage
Just by looking in her eyes.
Her laughter is a source of joy,
her works are warm and wise.
There is a kindness and compassion
to be found in her embrace,
and we see the light of heaven
shining from a Mother’s face.

Not, How Did He Die, But How Did He Live?

Not how did he die, but how did he live?
Not what did he gain, but what did he give?
These are the units to measure the worth
Of a man as a man, regardless of birth.
Not, what was his church, nor what was his creed?
But had he befriended those really in need?
Was he ever ready, with word of good cheer,
To bring back a smile, to banish a tear?
Not what did the sketch in the newspaper say,
But how many were sorry when he passed away.

To Those Whom I love & Those Who Love Me
When I am gone, release me, let me go.
I have so many things to see and do,
You mustn’t tie yourself to me with too many tears,
But be thankful we had so many good years.

I gave you my love, and you can only guess
How much you’ve given me in happiness.
I thank you for the love that you have shown,
But now it is time I traveled on alone.

So grieve for me a while, if grieve you must,
Then let your grief be comforted by trust.
It is only for a while that we must part,
So treasure the memories within your heart.

I won’t be far away for life goes on.
And if you need me, call and I will come.

Though you can’t see or touch me, I will be near.
And if you listen with your heart, you’ll hear,
All my love around you soft and clear.

And then, when you come this way alone,
I’ll greet you with a smile and a ‘Welcome Home’.
